CCL Group Stage set

The Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions League will feature five teams from Major League Soccer, four from the United States for the first time, and not one club from the Caribbean.

Thursday's results from the second leg of the Preliminary Round completed the 16-team field, with Costa Rica's Herediano advancing and eliminating Alpha United of Guyana, the last of three Caribbean clubs. Seattle , FC Dallas and Toronto FC joined fellow MLS clubs the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Colorado Rapids, while Morelia and Santos again gave Mexico four sides along with Pumas UNAM and defending champion Monterrey.

Group A will consist of Los Angeles, Alajuelense of Costa Rica, Morelia and Motagua of Honduras. Group B will be made up of Colorado, Real Espana of Honduras, Santos and El Salvador's Metapan. Pumas, Tauro of Panama, FC Dallas and Toronto will comprise Group C, and Monterrey, Comunicaciones of Guatemala, Seattle and Herediano will fill Group D.

Play will begin August 16 with four games, led by Santos at home against Espana.

Mexico-U.S. clashes between Morelia and the LA Galaxy, and Colorado against Santos Laguna on September 13 will highlight of the third round of the Group Stage.

The full Group Stage schedule, announced Tuesday, also has Dallas hosting Pumas on September 21 in the fourth round, Motagua hosting Morelia in the fourth round on September 22, and Seattle at home against defending champion Monterrey in the final round on October 18.






Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica advance at U-20 World Cup

Mexico tied England 0-0 on Thursday to finish second in Group F and lead three CONCACAF teams into the second round at U-20 World Cup in Colombia. Guatemala and Costa Rica also advanced.

"Los Chapines" advanced with a 1-0 victory over Croatia in its final Group D match, while Costa Rica moved on despite a 3-0 loss to Ecaudor in its Group C finale.

El Tri finished with a win, loss and draw in the first round and will face Cameroon on Tuesday in the knockout round.

Despite having been outscored 11-0 in its two previous matches, Marvin Ceballos tallied with nine minutes remaining and Guatemala edged Croatia on Saturday to claim the last berth in the round-of-16. Guatemala finished in third place in Group D with three points, enough to edge out New Zealand (two points) and Panama (one point), which finished third in their respective groups.

It will play Portugal on Tuesday On the strength of a 3-2 win over Australia, Costa Rica also finished third in Group C, and will play host Colombia on Tuesday.






Suriname completes CFU Olympic finals field

Friso Mando converted a penalty in the first minute of injury time and gave Suriname a 2-2 draw with Jamaica on Sunday that earned the Surinamese the last berth in final round of Caribbean Olympic qualifying.

The result finished Suriname with seven points atop Group A, same as Jamaica but ahead on goal difference. It will join fellow group winners Trinidad, Cuba and St. Kitts & Nevis in another group stage, from which two teams will advance to the CONCACAF finals next year.






Qualifying to begin Sunday in Caribbean

The Bahamas, Antigua & Barbuda and Bermuda will open qualifying for the CONCACAF Under-17 Women's Championship on Sunday, the first of four, three-team Caribbean groups that will start the elimination process.

The Bahamas will host first-round Group A in Nassau, with three games over five days. Guyana will host Group C in Georgetown August 17-21 with Curacao and Anguilla, while the Dominican Republic will be home in San Cristobal against Aruba and Jamaica August 24-28 in Group D.
