Hondurans wins Copa Centroamericana

Honduras won its third Central American nations title and first since 1995, scoring a goal in each half to beat a 10-man Costa Rica 2-1 Sunday. Walter Martinez gave "Los Catrachos" the lead in the eighth minute and Emil Martinez added the eventual winner in the 53rd as Honduras beat its regional rival at the Copa Centroamericana for the first time since 1999.

Costa Rica, which has won a record six titles and was appearing in its fourth straight final, finished runner-up for a second consecutive time.

Earlier, Amilcar Henriquez converted the clinching penalty to lift Panama over El Salavador 5-4 in a shootout after a 0-0 draw and give the host nation third place in the tournament. All four nations qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup June 5-25 in the United States along with Guatemala.

"Los Chapines" beat Nicaragua 2-1 two days earlier for fifth place and claimed the final Central American Gold Cup berth.






Suriname seals last spot in U-20 finals

Stefano Rijssel scored for his third straight game and led Suriname to a 2-1 victory over Bermuda on Sunday that gave it the final berth in the CONCACF Under-20 Championship.

Suriname finished atop its second-round qualifying group with nine points, while Bermuda, Netherlands Antilles and Guyana had three each.

Suriname joins automatic North American qualifiers Canada, Mexico and the United States, host Guatemala, Central American qualifiers Honduras, Panama and El Salvador as well as fellow Caribbean qualifiers Cuba, Jamaica, Guadeloupe and Trinidad for the CONCACAF championship finals April 3-17.

Four teams will qualify for the U-20 World Cup in Colombia July 20-August 20.






Guzman elected president of Dominican Football Federation

Osiris Guzman was elected president of the Dominican Football Federation on Sunday. Guzman ran unopposed after challenger Raul Polanco dropped out.

Also elected were First Vice President Fortuna Mendoza Quispe, Second Vice President Felix Ledesma, Third Vice President Prandy Pinales and members Miguel Medina, Nebil Manzillo, Felix Balbuena and Carlos Osiris Taveras.

Frederick elected president of United States Virgin Islands Soccer Federation

Hilaren Frederick was elected president of the United States Virgin Islands Soccer Federation on Sunday.

Also elected were First Vice President Trevor Antoine, Second Vice President Joseph Limeburger, Secretary of Administration Carol Howell, Secretary of Operations Carlton Freeman and Member Alderman Lesmond.

Young United States squad rallies to draw 1-1 with Chile

Teal Bunbury converted a 75th-minute penalty for his first international goal and gave a young United States side a 1-1 draw with Chile on Saturday as it continued its preparations for June's CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Bunbury, son of former Canadian international Alex Bunbury, scored in only his second game in a U.S. uniform, converting after Juan Agudelo earned the penalty 15 minutes after entering the match.

The United States next plays Egypt in Cairo on February 9.

U.S. wins Four Nations tournament; Canada finishes second

Carli Lloyd scored for a second time in three games and helped the United States women's national team to a 2-0 victory over China on Tuesday and the title at the Youngchuan Cup Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China.

The United States began the tournament by falling to Sweden 2-1 on Friday before recovering to defeat Canada 2-1 on Sunday.

Canada defeated Sweden 1-0 earlier Tuesday, leaving both it and the United States with six points. But the Americans took home the trophy due to its victory over its northern rival.
