Cuba, Jamaica qualify for Gold Cup

Cuba and Jamaica have qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning their first two matches at the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals and earning places in the semifinals.

Cuba qualified for a sixth straight Gold Cup with a 1-0 victory over Martinique 1-0 on Sunday, while Jamaica followed on Monday with a 2-0 victory over Guadeloupe to earn a trip to the confederation championship for an eighth time.

Earlier, Grenada moved to the brink qualifying for the Gold cup and reaching the Caribbean Cup semis with a 1-0 victory over Trinidad, a result that eliminated the Soca Warriors from title contention.

Grenada will face Cuba in its group finale on Tuesday needing only a draw to advance to the Gold Cup for the 2nd consecutive time. Martinique, still with a chance to advance, needs a victory vs. Trinidad in the other match and Grenada to lose to Cuba..

Jamaica led its group with six points, three ahead of Antigua & Barbuda, which needs only a draw against Guadeloupe on Wednesday to reach the semis and the Gold Cup. Cuba, which withdrew from the 2009 Gold Cup, and Jamaica will feature in Friday's semifinals, with the Caribbean Cup championship match set for Sunday.

CONCACAF.com to stream Digicel Caribbean Cup

CONCACAF will stream the first-round group finales from the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cuba faces 2008 runner-up Grenada on Tuesday at 5 p.m. U.S. eastern time, followed by host Martinique against Trinidad & Tobago at 7:30 p.m.

Group play ends on Wednesday with Guadeloupe vs. Antigua & Barbuda at 5 p.m. and Guyana vs. Jamaica at 7:30 p.m.






Monterrey, Santos qualify for 2011-12 tournament; Central American sides near climax

Mexico

Monterrey and Santos will return to the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League after advancing Sunday to the finals of the Mexican Torneo Apertura. Santos drew 3-3 with America in Torreon and advanced thanks to a 2-1 win in the opening leg. Monterrey defeated Pumas 2-0 at home after a 0-0 tie in the first leg. The finals will begin Thursday in Torreon before concluding Sunday in Monterrey. The winner will advance to next season's Group Stage while the runner-up will begin play in the Preliminary Round.

El Salvador

Regular season leader Metapan will face fourth-place finisher Aguila in the semifinals of the Torneo Apertura in El Salvador. In the other semifinal, Firpo will face second-place Alianza. The winner of the two-leg Torneo Apertura final will qualify for the 2011-12 Champions League.

Honduras

Real Espana and Champions League quarterfinalist Olimpia will face off for the Torneo Apertura title in Honduras this week. The finals will begin in Tegucigalpa on Sunday before finishing in San Pedro Sula on December 12. The winner of the Apertura will advance to next year's Champions League.

Panama

Chorillo became the last team to qualify for the semifinals of the Torneo Apertura in Panama and will face league leader Tauro in the final four. Arabe Unido will face San Francisco in the other match-up. The winner of the single-game Panamanian final will qualify to next year's CONCACAF Champions League.

Costa Rica

Alajuelense and Herediano will face off in the finals of the Costa Rican Torneo de Invierno beginning December 11. Alajuelense won 3-0 Sunday to complete a 5-1 aggregate victory over Cartagines and advance to the championship series. Herediano defeated Santos 1-0 on Saturday to negate a first-leg loss and advance due to a better regular-season record. The second leg is set for December 18 with the winner qualifying for the 2011-12 Champions League.

Guatemala

Municipal and Marquense drew 0-0 Sunday in the 22nd and last round to finish first and second in the Guatemalan Torneo Apertura, and will await two playoff winners in the league semifinals. Third-place Heredia will face sixth-place Suchitepequez, while fourth-place Comunicaciones will play fifth-place Mictlan on Wednesday in the first legs of their playoff series. Comunicaciones and Mictlan will play their second leg Saturday with Heredia and Suchitepequez meeting Sunday. The winner of the Apertura will qualify for the 2011-12 Champions League.






United States claims last berth, learns World Cup opponents along with Canada, Mexico

The United States claimed the last place in the Women's World Cup on Saturday, defeating Italy 1-0 on a goal by Amy Rodriguez to complete a 2-0 aggregate playoff victory and extend its record of qualifying for the finals of every women's world championship.

The win sent the Americans into Monday's draw, where it was seeded in Group C and drawn with Asian championship runner-up North Korea, debutante Colombia and 2003 runner-up Sweden.

CONCACAF champion Canada was drawn with host and two-time defending champion Germany in the first round of the Women's World Cup, as well as eight-time and reigning African champion Nigeria and France in Group A of the June 26-July 17 tournament.

CONCACAF runner-up Mexico was drawn into Group B with Japan, New Zealand and England.






Guatemala advances to U-17 finals

Guatemala defeated Nicaragua 1-0 on Friday to claim the last Central American berth in the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship.

The win completed a 4-0 aggregate victory for Guatemala.

Guatemala joins fellow Central American qualifiers Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador and Panama in the Under-17 finals February 14-27 in Jamaica. Canada, Mexico and the United States have qualified automatically while Trinidad & Tobago and Cuba have clinched two of the Caribbean's four berths in the 12-team field.

The final two berths will be decided in the Dominican Republic December 8-12 when it hosts Group F of Caribbean qualifying.






Panama qualifies for U-20 Championship

Cecilio Waterman scored a goal in each game and led Panama to 1-0 victories over Costa Rica and Nicaragua to qualify for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

The victories Thursday and Saturday in La Chorrera, Panama, earned it the top place in Central America's qualifying Group 1, and sent it into the 12-team field for the April 3-17 confederation finals with host Guatemala, automatic qualifiers Canada, Mexico and the United States as well as Cuba, Jamaica and Guadeloupe from the Caribbean.

Costa Rica will have another chance to qualify, facing the runner-up from Group 2 in a playoff for Central America's fourth and final berth. Group 2 is set to be played December 1-5 in Honduras, with the host, Belize and El Salvador.

Besides the Group 2 winner and playoff survivor, two more teams will qualify from the Caribbean.






CONCACAF Champion El Salvador matched with host Mexico

Defending champion El Salvador and host Mexico will highlight the opening of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship on Wednesday.

The rivals were drawn into Group A and are joined by Canada and Jamaica. The two-time champion United States was placed in Group B along with Costa Rica, Bahamas and Guatemala during Wednesday's draw in the Pacific resort of Puerto Vallara, Mexico.

The five-day competition will be played for the third consecutive year at Unidad Deportivo Agustin Flores in Puerto Vallarta.

The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals on December 4. The semifinal winners will qualify for the Beach Soccer World Cup in Italy September 1-11.

The CONCACAF title game is set for Sunday.
