First two rounds of Group Stage announced

The schedule for the first two rounds of the Group Stage was announced Friday with the remainder to be released following the conclusion of the Preliminary Round.

The winner of the Preliminary Round pairing of Toronto FC and Honduras' Motagua will open the Group Stage on August 17, playing at home against either two-time Champions League runner-up Cruz Azul of Mexico or San Francisco of Panama.

The Landon Donovan-led Los Angeles Galaxy or the Caribbean champion Puerto Rico Islanders will play Olimpia of Honduras, and the opening-night finale will have Monterrey facing 29-time Costa Rican champion Saprissa.

The Champions League will begin July 27 with the first leg of four Preliminary Round knockout series. The second leg is set for a week later (August 3-5) with the eight Preliminary Round winners advancing to the 16-team Group Stage.

Women's U-20 World Cup to begin this week

Costa Rica, Mexico and the United States will begin their World Cup campaigns this week as the Women's U-20 World Cup begins in Germany.

Costa Rica opened the tournament today losing 4-2 against the host nation in the tournaments inaugural match. Las Ticas face France on Friday, as well as against Colombia July 20.

Mexico will face Japan on Wednesday in its Group C opener. On Saturday Las Aztecas will then face England before wrapping it's group schedule against Nigeria on July 21.

The CONCACAF champion United States will begin its participation in Group D on Wednesday against Ghana. The Americans will face Switzerland on Saturday before finishing July 21 against South Korea.






Mexican Archundia equals World Cup referee record

Mexican Armando Archundia equaled the record for World Cup matches as a referee with his -eighth on Saturday when he officiated the third-place game between Germany and Uruguay.

Archundia matched the record previously held exclusively by France's Joel Quinou.

Archundia appeared in a total of three matches at the 2010 World Cup in addition to participating in five during the 2006 championship in Germany.






Guatemala appoints Ever Hugo Almeida as new coach of national team

The Guatemala Football Federation presented Ever Hugo Almeida as the coach of its national team on Monday.

The Uruguayan-born, naturalized Paraguayan previously coached in Guatemala, having led Comunicaciones to three titles.
