Mexico eliminated by Argentina in the second round

Mexico was eliminated from the 2010 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, losing 3-1 to Argentina in the second round. Carlos Tevez scored twice and Gonzalo Higuain added his tournament-leading fourth for the South Americans, while Javier Hernandez accounted for Mexico's lone goal.

It was the fifth consecutive time Mexico has been eliminated in the second round, and the second straight by the Albiceleste, who won 2-1 in extra time in 2006.

The United States falls to Ghana

The United States allowed a goal in the third minute of extra time and fell to Ghana 2-1 on Saturday, knocking out the Americans from the quadrennial world championship.

It was the second straight time Ghana had eliminated the United States, having beaten it their final group match in 2006.

The Americans gave up an early goal for the third time in four matches, but tied it on a penalty kick by Landon Donovan early in the second half. However, Asamoah Gyan won the match for the Ghanaians with his extra-time strike.

Honduras tied Switzerland, eliminated in group phase

After losing to Spain and Chile, Honduras managed to draw Switzerland 0-0 on Friday.

Honduras, playing in its second World Cup and first since 1982, finished fourth in Group H with one point. The Catrachos, which were shutout only three times in 18 qualifying matches, were the only team other than Algeria to finish the World Cup without scoring a goal.

Cuba beats Guyana 1-0 in bid for final WGC berth

Yezenia Gallardo scored her sixth goal in four games to give Cuba a 1-0 victory over Guyana on Saturday in the first leg of their Caribbean playoff, seizing the early advantage in the bid for the final berth in CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup.

The two will face off again on July 3 in Guyana for the second leg to determine the eighth and last team in the continental championship finals.

Gallardo scored in the 22nd minute, adding to the three goals she tallied in a 6-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda, and the pair she had against Puerto Rico in a 4-3 win. Cuba and Guyana are seeking to join Canada, Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala and fellow Caribbean sides Trinidad and Haiti in the CONCACAF finals set for late October and early November.
