Mexico qualifies for second round

Despite falling to Group A winner Uruguay 1-0 on Tuesday, Mexico advanced to the second round of the World Cup for the fifth consecutive time. As Group A runner-up, Mexico will face the Group B winner Argentina on Sunday.

Mexico defeated France 2-0 on Thursday with goals by Javier Hernandez and Cuauhtemoc Blanco, and finished with four points, three behind Uruguay and ahead of host South Africa on goal difference.

The United States looks to advance on Wednesday

The United States rallied from a two-goal, first-half deficit to forge a 2-2 draw with Group C rival Slovenia on Friday, sending it to Wednesday's encounter against Algeria with a chance to reach the second round.

Landon Donovan started the comeback with a goal to start the second half and Michael Bradley equalized with eight minutes remaining.

With an opening draw against England, the United States has its destiny in its own hands, needing only a victory over Algeria to assure a place in the round-of-16.

Honduras loses first two games

Honduras lost its second game at the World Cup on Monday, losing 2-0 to European champion Spain and moving to the edge of elimination. David Villa scored both goals for the Spanish. Honduras fell 1-0 to Chile in its first World Cup since 1982 on Wednesday in Group H.

Jean Beusejour scored the game's lone goal in the first half. Honduras, still with a mathematical chance of advancing, will look to gain its first points on Friday against Switzerland.

Caribbean playoff rescheduled

The first leg of Cuba and Guyana's playoff for the last berth in the Women's Gold Cup has been postponed until Saturday, with the second leg also delayed a day.

Difficulties for the Lady Jaguars traveling to Cuba negated the original June 18 date for the first leg, which also impacted the second leg in Guyana, moving it to July 3.

The two are vying for the third and final place from the Caribbean in the eight-team field for the Women's Gold Cup, set for late October-early November. T

he winner will join Caribbean neighbors Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti, as well as Canada, Mexico and the United States from North America as well as Central American qualifiers Costa Rica and Guatemala.
