Cruz Azul takes one-goal lead into second leg of finals

Cruz Azul defeated Pachuca 2-1 at Estadio Azul in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League finals on Wednesday. The return leg will be played on Wednesday at Pachuca's Estadio Hidalgo.

Cruz Azul scored twice early on defensives errors by Pachuca, including an own goal by Carlos Gerardo Rodríguez. Pachuca answered with an important away goal by Damián Álvarez in the second half.

Cruz Azul is returning to the title series for a second straight year after losing to fellow Mexican club Atlante in 2009, while Pachuca is looking to reach the Club World Cup for the third time in four years.

Clubs close on domestic league titles, 2010-2011 Champions League berths

Thirteen berths remain undecided for next season's CONCACAF Champions League: two from Mexico, one from Canada, seven from Central America and three from the Caribbean. The state of severl of those berths at a glance:

Mexico

The Torneo Bicentenario finished Sunday with América becoming the last team to qualify for the Liguilla, beating Santos 1-0 while Cruz Azul, Morelia and Atlas failed to win. The Liguilla, which begins this Saturday, will pit Monterrey vs. Pachuca, Chivas vs. Morelia, Toluca vs. América and Pumas vs Santos. The finalists will join Monterrey and Cruz Azul in the 2010-11 Champions League

Honduras

The Clausura of the Liga Nacional has reached the semifinals. On Wednesday Olimpia will face Vida while Montagua will play Platense in the second legs of their respective playoff series. The first legs of both pairings resulted in 2-2 draws on Sunday. The season champion will join Marathon in the Champions League.

Guatemala

Suchitepequez will face Peñarol while Municipal will meet San Carlos in the quarterfinals of the Torneo de Clausura playoffs. The winners will advance to face Comunicaciones and Xelaju, which finished first and second in the regular season. The winner of the current tournament will join Municipal in the next Champions League.

Costa Rica

The Torneo de Verano is down to the semifinals. Saprissa will face Santos de Guapiles while San Carlos will meet Liga Deportiva Alajuelense. The matches will be played on Wednesday and May 2. The winner will join Brujas in the next Champions League

El Salvador

The semifinals of the Torneo Clausura will feature regular season winner Luis Ángel Firpo against Isidro Metapán while second place CD Águila will face third-place Vista Hermosa. The Salvadoran champion will join CD FAS in the Champions League.

Panama

Atletico Chiriqui won its fifth match in six games to finish atop the Clausura table by two points, earning the top seed for the semifinals. Chiriquí will visit San Francisco in the first leg on Friday while Chorillo will host Árabe Unido on Sunday. The Panamanian champion will join last season's champion Arabe Unido in the 2010-11 Champions League.

Canada

The Nutrilite Canadian Championship, the three-team tournament that decides Canada's berth to the CONCACAF Champions League, will begin Wednesday with defending champion Toronto FC against the Montreal Impact. The winner will receive a Preliminary Round berth in the Champions League. For a full schedule please click here.

Caribbean

Puerto Rican clubs Bayamon FC and the Puerto Rico Islanders along with Trinidadian sides Joe Public and San Juan Jabloteh will meet for the final league phase of the CFU Club Champions Cup May 5-9 in Macoya, Trinidad. The top three finishers will qualify for the Preliminary Round of the Champions League.






United States, Mexico, Costa Rica learn fate World Cup fate

Defending CONCACAF champion the United States will open against Ghana and also face Switzerland and the Korea Republic at the Under-20 Women's World Cup according to Thursday's draw.

The Americans will begin July 14 in Dresden, Germany, face Switzerland three days later and then complete its Group D schedule against Korea Republic in Bielefeld on July 21.

Mexico will play in Group C against England, Nigeria and Japan in Augsburg and Bochum, while Costa Rica, playing in its first U-20 Women's World Cup, was drawn into Group A with host Germany, Colombia and France. Costa Rica will open the 32-game tournament against Germany in Bochum.

Two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals of the July 13-August 1 tournament.






Guatemala earns berth in finals

Guatemala defeated Belize 5-1 and El Salvador 2-1 in a span of three days to qualify to the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup. Melany Cayetano led the Salvadorans with three goals in the two games.

The results earned host Guatemala the top spot from in its Central American qualifying group and one of the region's two berths in the expanded, eight-team CONCACAF championship set for late October-early November. It also claimed a place in the Central American and Caribbean Games along with El Salvador, which finished second in the three-team qualifying group.

El Salvador earned its CAC berth with a 9-0 victory over Belize on Tuesday. Nicaragua defeated Honduras 2-1 on Monday in Managua to open Group B. The two also face Costa Rica with the region's other berth at stake in the Women's Gold Cup and two in the CAC Games in July.
