ATLANTE FINISHES FOURTH AT CLUB WORLD CUP
After a quarterfinal victory over Auckland City, Atlante lost to FC Barcelona and then were subdued Saturday by the Pohang Steelers on penalties 4-3 following a 1-1 draw in the Club World Cup's third-place game. It was the second consecutive year CONCACAF's representative finished in fourth place.

The Korean side went ahead in the 41st minute through Denilson, but Atlante equalized when Rafael Márquez Lugo scored off a Gabriel Pereyra pass just after the interval. Atlante hit the right post twice, but could not push home the winner. In Wednesday's semifinals, Atlante took a fifth-minute lead over Barcelona on Guillermo Rojas' opportunistic strike. The European champion then overwhelmed the Mexican side 3-1 with goals from Sergio Busquets, Lionel Messi and Pedro.

Barcelona went on to win the championship, defeating Estudiantes of Argentina 2-1 in Saturday's final. It was the Spanish team's record sixth title of 2009, a feat never before accomplished by any team.

MUNICIPAL WINS GUATEMALAN APERTURA, PLACE IN 2010-11 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Municipal drew 0-0 with Comunicaciones in Guatemala City on Sunday to win the Guatemalan Apertura championship, completing a 1-0 aggregate triumph and a place in next season's Champions League. The title is Municipal's 27th league crown and its 12th since 1994. The Reds defeated Comunicaciones 1-0 in the first leg Thursday on a goal by Argentine Martín Crossa. Municipal is assured of at least a place in the 2010-11 Preliminary Round and could advance directly to the Group Stage if it finishes with the best record over the Apertura and Clausura championships. Comunicaciones already has qualified is for the quarterfinals of this year's Champions League, where it will face Mexico's Pachuca in March.

FAS CLAIMS SALVADORAN TITLE IN EXTRA TIME
FAS captured its 17th Salvadoran league championship with a 3-2 extra time win over Águila in the Apertura final Sunday at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador. José Odir Flores gave FAS the lead 30 seconds after the opening whistle. In the first extra period, an own-goal by Águila's Arturo Albarrán (95') and a strike by Juan Carlos Moscoso (97') lifted FAS to the title and a Preliminary Round berth in the CONCACAF Champions League. It was FAS' first title since the 2005 Clausura championship. Jamaican international Nicholas Addlery, on loan from the Puerto Rico Islanders, scored both Águila goals.

UNLIKELY FINALS PAIRING ADDS INTRIGUE TO COSTA RICAN TORNEO INVIERNO
Puntarenas and Brujas will meet in the two-leg Costa Rican Torneo Invierno finals for a place in next year's CONCACAF Champions League. Puntarenas lost to Herediano 2-1 in the second leg of their semifinal pairing Sunday, but advanced on 4-3 on aggregate after a 3-1 first-leg victory on Wednesday.. Brujas won both legs of its semifinal against Pérez Zeledón 2-1 to advance on a 4-2 aggregate. The first leg of the finals is set for Wednesday, with the second leg set for Sunday.

REAL ESTELI ONE STEP FROM NICARAGUAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Ten-man Real Estelí overcame visiting Walter Ferreti 1-0 in the first leg of the Nicaraguan Apertura finals Sunday at Independence Stadium. Brazilian Clayton Da Cunha converted a 72nd-minute penalty 10 minutes after Marlon Medina was ejected. The second leg is scheduled for Sunday with the winner potentially putting itself in position to earn Nicaragua's lone berth in the CONCACAF Champions League. The team with the best overall record between the Apertura and Clausura champions will claim the Preliminary Round berth, providing Nicaragua has an approved stadium.

T&T'S UNDER-23 TEAM HEADS TO BERMUDA FOR FRIENDLIES
Trinidad & Tobago's under-23 team will travel to Bermuda on Saturday for three a three-game friendly tour in preparation for the Pan Am Games and 2012 Olympic qualifying. Comprised mostly of U-20 players, Trinidad will face its Bermuda counterparts Monday and on January 1 with a match against club side Devonshire Cougars on December 30. Along with regulars Leston Paul, Jean-Luc Rochford, Akeem Adams, Glenroy Samuel and Juma Clarence, head coach Zoran Vranes said that US-based players returning home over the holiday period will also be looked at for possible future selection.

GUATEAMALAN UNDER-20 WOMEN DEFEAT BELIZE IN FRIENDLY
Guatemala topped Belize 7-0 in a women's under-20 friendly at the Estadio Cemtentos Progreso in Guatemala City on Saturday. Daniela Mendez and Waleska Barrios each scored twice in the first half, while Ana Lucia Martinez, Katherine Ramos and Maria Amanda Monterroso added one apiece. Guatemala will host the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in Guatemala City January 20-30.
