WORLD CUP DRAW DETERMINES OPPONENTS FOR MEXICO, HONDURAS, UNITED STATES

Mexico, Honduras and the United States were introduced to their World Cup group opponents on Friday at the final draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. México will play in the opening match of the World Cup on June 11 against host South Africa in Johannesburg. El Tri, who were drawn into Group A, will then face Uruguay and 2006 runner-up France.

The United States will open on June 12 against England in Rustenberg in the opening match of Group C followed by matches vs. Algeria and Slovenia.

Making its first World Cup appearance since 1982, Honduras will open Group H against Chile on June 16 in Nelspruit before facing European champion Spain and Switzerland.

The final will be played on July 11 in Johannesburg.






CLUBS IN MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA SEEK CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION

Mexico

Cruz Azul beat Morelia 2-1 Saturday following a 0-0 draw Wednesday to advance to the finals of the Mexican first division's Torneo Apertura. Cruz Azul will face Monterrey, which advanced with a 2-0 home win on Thursday and a 1-1 draw Sunday against tournament favorite TolucaThe series starts in Monterrey on Thursday before concluding in Mexico City on Sunday. The Apertura champion will earn a berth in the Group Stage of next year's CONCACAF Champions League while the runner-up will qualify for the Preliminary Round.

Costa Rica

Liberia will face Brujas while Puntarenas will play Cartaginés in the quarterfinals of the Costa Rican Torneo Invierno on Wednesday and Sunday. Group leaders Pérez Zeledón and Herediano await the quarterfinal winners. The winter season champion will qualify for next season's Champions League.

Guatemala

Comunicaciones advanced to the semifinals of the Liga Nacional playoffs by defeating Marquense 3-2 on aggregate. Similarly, Heredia clinched its semifinal berth by beating Juventud Retalteca 5-0 after losing the first leg 4-2. In the semifinals, Comunicaciones will face top-ranked Xelajú FC, and Heredia will meet Municipal.

Panama

Tauro and Árabe Unido will face off in the final of Panamian Torneo Apertura on Sunday. Tauro drew 4-4 with Chiriqui in the return leg Saturday but advanced thanks to a 3-0 win in the first leg. Árabe Unido lost its first leg against Chorrillo 3-0 but rallied to win the second leg 4-0 in extra time Sunday and advance. The league winner will qualify for next season's Champions League.

El Salvador

Águila and FAS both won the first legs of their Torneo Apertura semifinal series. FAS defeated Vista Hermosa 2-1 on Saturday while Águila shut out Firpo 2-0 a day later. The winner will qualify for next season's Champions League.






CAYMAN ISLANDS SET TO HOST SECOND LEG OF PLAYOFF WITH DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The Dominican Republic and Cayman Islands drew 2-2 Saturday in the first leg of their two-game playoff for the last of three berths from the Caribbean in the CONCACAF Under-17 Women's Championship.

The second leg is set for Saturday in the Cayman Islands.






UNDER-20 WOMEN'S SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

Canada will face Costa Rica to open the CONCACF Under-20 Women's Championship while host Guatemala will play Cuba later on January 20 in the struggle to determine the confederation's three qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup.

Trinidad & Tobago will open play for Group B the following day against Mexico, with the reigning world champion United States completing the first day of group matches against Jamaica immediately afterward.

Play in Group A concludes on January 24 while Group B will finish a day later. The group winners will play the runners-up from the opposite group on January 28, with the championship and third-place matches set for Saturday, January 30.

The finalists and third-place winner will qualify for next year's World Cup in Germany July 13-August 1.






CANADA REMOVES INTERIM TAG FROM HART'S TITLE

Stephen Hart had the interim tag removed from his title as manager of the Canadian national team on Monday, given the job full time in the country's bid to return to the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

The 45-year-old Trinidad & Tobago native was given the job initially in April and led Canada to a quarterfinal berth at the Gold Cup in July. This is Hart's second time as manager, having led Canada to a semifinal berth in the 2007 Gold Cup before losing to the eventual champion United States.






GUYANA, HAITI CROWN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Alpha United FC captured the 2009 Guyana Super League title with a 2-1 victory over Guyana Defence Force at National Stadium in Georgetown on November 29. Alpha United reached the title match after topping Milerock 3-2 in extra time in the semifinals on November 15 at the National Stadium, while Guyana Defence Force defeated Camptown by a score of 3-0.

Meanwhile, Racing Club Haïtien claimed their record 11th Haitian Championnat de Premiere Division title after finishing the 2009 Clôture standings tied with 28 points and defeating SA Cavaly on a tiebreaker.






PANAMA TO HOST FIFA REGIONAL GRASSROOTS SEMINAR

Two representatives from each of the Central American national associations of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama will participate in the FIFA Regional Grassroots Seminar Friday through Sunday in Panama City .

Each association member will present an assessment and future plans for an early development program, including government cooperation and sponsorship.

The seminar will conclude with FIFA instructors Jorge Diaz-Cidoncha, Humberto Grondona and Mauricio Marques meeting with the association participants to analyze each country's situation.
