CLUBS IN MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA SEEK CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION

Mexico

Morelia, Cruz Azul, Monterrey and regular season winner Toluca have prevailed to reach the semifinals of the Mexican first division's Torneo Apertura Liguilla. Following its 4-2 aggregate victory over Santos, Morelia will face Cruz Azul, which eliminated Puebla. After subduing América, Monterrey next faces Toluca, which outlasted San Luis. Morelia and Cruz Azul will play Wednesday and Saturday with Monterrey and Toluca facing off Thursday and Sunday. The Apertura champion will earn a berth in the Group Stage of next year's CONCACAF Champions League while the runner-up will qualify for the Preliminary Round.

Guatemala

Xelajú and Municipal secured semifinal berths in the Liga Nacional title playoffs, finishing first and second as the regular season concluded this past weekend. The other two semifinalists will be decided Wednesday and Saturday when third-seeded Marquense plays sixth-seeded Comunicaciones in a two-game playoff, and fourth-seeded Heredia meets fifth-seeded Juventud Retalteca. Xelajú will face the lowest seeded team that advances.

Panama

Chorillo FC and Tauro FC won the first legs of their semifinal series in the Panamian Torneo Apertura playoffs. Chorrillo FC defeated CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinalists Árabe Unido 3-0 with the return leg to be played Sunday. Tauro beat Atlético Chiriqui 3-0. The second leg is set for Saturday.

Honduras

Marathón qualified for the Champions League for a third straight time, defeating Olimpia 2-0 on Wednesday to overcome a 1-0 first leg loss to win the 2009 Honduran Apertura championship. By winning its seventh championship, Marathon assured itself of at least a Preliminary Round berth in the 2010-11 Champions League. The Verdolagas already have reached the quarterfinals of Champions League for the second consecutive year and will face Pumas in March.

El Salvador

Vista Hermosa and Metapán will meet in a one-game playoff Wednesday to claim the fourth and final spot in the the El Salvadoran Torneo Apertura semifinals. Starting Sunday, FAS will face the playoff winner, while Aguila will play Firpo. The winner will qualify for next season's Champions League.






MEXICO, HONDURAS, UNITED STATES TO LEARN WORLD CUP OPPONENTS ON FRIDAY

Mexico, Honduras and the United States will learn their first-round opponents for the 2010 World Cup on Friday when FIFA conducts the Final Draw for the quadrennial championship. The event will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, at the International Convention Centre.

The draw will divide the 32 teams into eight groups of four.






PANAMA QUALIFIES FOR CONCACAF WOMEN'S U-17 CHAMPIONSHIP

Panama defeated El Salvador 3-1 on Saturday to qualify for the CONCACAF Under-17 Women's Championship. Panama won both their matches in the three three-team event, having defeated Nicaragua 3-2 on November 24.

Panama was placed in Group A along with Canada, Jamaica and Mexico. Group B will be comprised of host Costa Rica, the United States, Haiti and either the Dominican Republic or the Cayman Islands.

Costa Rica will stage the second U-17 championship March 9-20 in Estadio Ricardo Saprissa and Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in the San Jose area.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, CAYMAN ISLANDS SET TO PLAY FOR FINAL BERTH

The Dominican Republic and Cayman Islands will face off in a two-leg playoff for the last of three berths from the Caribbean in the Under-17 Women's Championship.

The first leg will be played in the Cayman Islands on Saturday with the second leg set for December 12 in the Dominican Republic.






SCHEDULE FOR CONCACAF FINALS TO BE UNVEILED WEDNESDAY

The schedule for the CONCACAF Under-20 Women's Championship will be unveiled Wednesday at a press conference in Guatemala City.

The draw for the January 19-30 event was conducted at the CONCACAF Executive Committee meeting in New York and placed Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba and host Guatemala in Group A, while the United States, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica were joined in Group B.
