HONDURAS JOINS MEXICO, UNITED STATES IN SOUTH AFRICA

Honduras claimed the last guaranteed berth from CONCACAF in next year's World Cup on Wednesday (October 14), beating El Salvador 1-0 while Costa Rica was held to a 2-2 draw by the United States.

The results send los Catrachos to South Africa along with Mexico and the United States, which had claimed their places four days earlier. Honduras, which came into the final match day one point behind Costa Rica in fourth place, qualified for the World Cup for the second time in its history and first since 1982, beating its Central American rival at Estadio Cuscatlán on a header from Carlos Pavón.

Honduras wasn't assured of qualifying until American defender Jonathan Bornstein headed home a corner on the last play against Costa Rica five minutes into injury time to complete the United States' rally from a two-goal, first-half deficit.

Costa Rica can still qualify for the 2010 World Cup, but needs to win a two-game playoff against South American fifth-place finisher Uruguay. The matches will be held on November 14 in Uruguay's Estadio Centenario before switching to Costa Rica's Estadio Ricardo Saprissa November 18.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTERFINAL SPOTS UP FOR GRABS

Pumas, Cruz Azul and Pachuca already have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, leaving the five remaining spots to be decided on the last match day of the Group Stage this week.

Pachuca claimed its place in the knockout round with a 1-0 victory at the Houston Dynamo on September 30. On Wedenesday (October 21), Arabe Unido travels to Hidalgo, Mexico, to face Pachuca while the Dynamo visits Metapan. Arabe Unido holds a three-point advantage over the Dynamo, yet Houston will advance if both teams finish with 10 points.

Despite having won four of five games, Toluca has yet to qualify for the quarterfinals after losing its last match to Marathon 2-0 in San Pedro Sula on October 1. Both spots in Group B will be decided between Toluca, first with 12 points, and Marathon and D.C., both of which have nine points. Toluca will win the group with a win or draw - and can even advance with a loss depending on the margin of victory in the group's final two matches. Toluca has a goal difference seven better than DC United and 15 over Marathon. On Tuesday (October 20), the Mexican club will host D.C. United while Marathon will face San Juan Jabloteh in Trinidad two days later.

With Cruz Azul already advanced, second place in Group C will come down to the Columbus Crew and Saprissa, following their 1-1 draw in Columbus on September 29. Columbus, which has seven points, travels to face the already eliminated Puerto Rico Islanders on Tuesday (October 20), while Saprissa, in third place with five points, hosts Cruz Azul the same day. If the teams tie with eight points, the Crew will advance based on the head-to-head results.

While Pumas advanced out of Group D with a 2-1 win against W Connection on September 30, the three other teams all have a chance at the second berth. Comunicaciones and Real Espana each have six points while W Connection remains alive with four. On Wednesday (October 21), W Connection hosts Real Espana while a day later Comunicaciones hosts Pumas in Guatemala.
