Failing to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Games was such a major disappointment for Mexico, it cost Hugo Sanchez his job as manager of the senior national team. While the United States has played at more Olympics, Mexico has won the CONCACAF qualifying tournament more times than any other nation (five). Mexico's under-22 team (the core of this year's U-23 side) lost all three games by a combined 4-1 at last year's Copa America, but three months later went undefeated to win the Pan American Games on home soil.
