After not entering Olympic qualifying until 1976, and not making the CONCACAF finals until 1992, Honduras has become a force in the region with the competition limited to U-23s. It has won two of the last three Olympic qualifying tournaments and claimed the silver at the 1999 Pan American Games. This year's squad has an experienced core, led by midfielder Alfredo Mejia and defender Johnny Leveron, both of whom played at last year's Gold Cup. Additionally, coach Luis Fernando Suarez also has striker Roger Rojas of Olimpia, who led the team with three goals in Central American qualifying, Vida midfielder Rommel Quioto, who is among the scoring leaders in the Honduran Clausura, and Andy Najar of D.C. United.
