Gene Edwards led the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) as its President, during the years of explosive growth of the game in all parts of the country. Fuelled by the exposure and standards of the North American Soccer league, the USSF added many new State Associations to the core of the body. Thus, in 1984, Mr. Edwards was able to hand over to his successor a much bigger national body. His work in the game continued thereafter as a Member of the CONCACAF Executive Committee and eventually as Senior Vice-President of the Confederation.
