The four-day course, directed by FIFA/CONCACAF Referee Instructors Esse Baharmast (USA), Carlos Batres (Guatemala), Peter Prendergast (Jamaica) and Rodolfo Sibrian (El Salvador), focused on topics such as fitness, leadership, professionalism, management of game/player communication, match analysis and overall preparation.
"This week our cadre of FIFA instructors and Referee Committee members were focused on strengthening the foundation of CONCACAF's Elite Referee," said Brian Hall, CONCACAF Director of Referee Administration. "Our goal was to ensure, that after four intense days of instruction and field practices, our referees leave with new tools and new concepts that will aid them in being the best they can be."
The course also served as preparation for other CONCACAF-related competitions such as this year's Champions League and FIFA World Cup qualifying.
"This is an excellent course with a mixture of veteran and rookie referees with very experienced instructors," said Roberto Moreno, a referee from Panama. "The materials and lectures that we have received will help us improve our performances in both CONCACAF and FIFA tournaments."
The CONCACAF Gold Cup opens on June 5 with a doubleheader at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and culminates with the June 25 championship match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
