Three goals by Christine Sinclair and two more from Randee Hermus helped Canada (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 7:0 triumph over Uruguay (0-2-0, 0 Points) in a Group A encounter at the Miécimo da Silva Sport Complex.
In the other Group A match at the João Havelange Stadium, the hosts, Brazil (2-0-0, 6 Points) defeated Jamaica (1-1-0, 3 Points) by a score of 5:0.
In Group B action on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, goals by Lauren Cheney, Tobin Heath and Kelley O'Hara led the USA (2-0-0, 6 Points) to a 3:1 win against Panama (0-2-0, 0 Points) at the Miécimo de Silva Sport Complex.
Meanwhile, Veronica Charlyn Corral scored twice and Juana Evelyn Lopez, Monica Ocampo and Liz Del Rosario Saucedo for Mexico (1-0-0, 3 Points) in the 5:0 victory over Paraguay (0-2-0, 0 Points) at the João Havelange Stadium.
The women's tournament continues on Monday (16 July) as Jamaica takes on Uruguay and then Panama faces Paraguay at the Miécimo de Silva Sport Complex, while at the João Havelange Stadium, Canada meets Ecuador (0-1-0, 0 Points) and then Mexico plays against Argentina (1-0-0, 3 Points).
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals at Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã Stadium on 23 July with the bronze and gold medal games set for three days later at the same venue.
