Rigoberto Gómez opened the scoring for Guatemala in the fifth minute, but Mexico struck back with two quick goals from Carlos Vela (30th) and Cesar Villaluz (31st). Marvin ávila scored in the 64th and 73rd minute for the chapines who end a 16-game winless streak against the tricolores.
The last victory by Guatemala over Mexico came on 2 December 1969 during the CONCACAF Campeonato de Naciones (Nations Cup) in San José, Costa Rica, where the chapines won 1:0.
