In the three years that teams from CONCACAF have taken part in the Copa Nissan Sudamericana the story has, mostly, been one of success. Pumas UNAM made it to the final in 2005 while Pachuca CF went one step further winning it all last year. In the 2007 edition of the tournament Club América will be looking to add to the accomplishments of their fellow Mexican teams as they take on Argentina's Arsenal in the two leg home-and-away final.
Club América's route to the final begun with an all-Mexican match up with Pachuca. The á
guilas stunned the defending Copa Nissan Sudamericana champions in the first game with three rapid fire goals in nine minutes running out 4:1 winners. In the second-leg at the Azteca Stadium, Club América lost 2:0 in front of their home crowd but progressed to the quarterfinals 4:3 on aggregate thanks in part to an inspired display by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
In the quarterfinals, Club América faced Vasco da Gama of Brazil and again a strong first leg performance would set the tone. Despite losing the second-leg in Brazil by a score of 1:0, the
Aguilas progressed to the semifinal courtesy of their 2:0 victory in the home encounter. In the semifinals, just as with the previous two rounds, it was a strong first leg performance that set the tone. A 3:2 win against Colombian team CD Millonarios in Bogotá, with a goal six minutes from time proved to be the springboard for a comfortable 2:0 victory in the second leg, a 5:2 aggregate score, and a place in the final.
Making their second appearance in the Copa Sudamericana, Arsenal have already progressed further than they did in their inaugural appearance in 2004 when they lost to Club Bolívar of Bolivia at the quarterfinal stage. In the preliminary phase of the 2007 tournament, Arsenal opened up with a 4:1 aggregate defeat of 2002 Champions San Lorenzo to progress to the first round and a two leg match up with Brazilian side Goiás. Two closely contested affairs against the Goiânia-based side saw Arsenal emerge 4:3 aggregate winners and move onto the quarterfinal stage and a date with CD Guadalajara.
The first leg of the quarterfinal in Argentina ended goalless but in the return fixture at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara it took just two minutes for Arsenal to open the scoring.
Chivas would tie it up quickly but two more goals without reply were enough to take the Argentinean team to their first Sudamericana semifinal. In the last four, Arsenal took on fellow Argentine side River Plate. Both legs of the semifinal finished scoreless and it took a penalty shoot out to separate the teams with Arsenal emerging triumphant (4:2) and securing a precious berth in the tournament final.
After 64 games between teams from 12 different countries, this year's competition has come down to a team from Mexico and a team from Argentina. 180 minutes of football, across two legs, will decide the 2007 Copa Nissan Sudamericana champion and given the opponents both sides have faced on route to the final, whoever ends up victorious will have more than justified their success.
