The USA secured a place in the semifinals of the Women's Football Tournament Beijing 2008 after a 2:1 win over Canada after extra time at the Shanghai Stadium on Friday.

Following a hour and forty minute delay due to thunderstorms, the encounter resumed at the 18th minute with the USA already leading 1:0 on a goal by Angela Hucles from the 12th minute.

Christine Sinclair tied the match for the Maple Leafs with goal in the 30th minute. After a scoreless second half, the encounter went to extra time where Natasha Kai got the game-winner for the Stars & Stripes in the 101st minute.

The USA will face Japan in the semifinals scheduled for Monday, 18 August at the Worker's Stadium in Beijing. Meanwhile, the other semifinal in Beijing has Brazil against Germany.

The bronze medal and gold medal matches will take place at the Worker's Stadium on 21 August.
