The San Jose Earthquakes became the second team to claim a berth in next season's CONCACAF Champions League, securing Major League Soccer's Supporters Shield trophy Saturday night as the team with the best regular-season record in the U.S. league.
The 0-0 draw between Sporting Kansas City, which already had assured itself of a place in the Champions League by winning the U.S. Open Cup, and the New York Red Bulls eliminated the last team that could catch San Jose.
Kansas City improved to 60 points with one game remaining, while San Jose has 64 with two matches, including Sunday's encounter with the LA Galaxy.
San Jose is the 14th different U.S. club to qualify for the Champions League since it was inaugurated in 2008. The two remaining U.S. berths in the 24-team field will be filled with the champion and runner-up of the MLS Cup, set for December 1.
