NEW YORK - Jafeth Parea of Panama, who was in charge of Tuesday's Mexico-El Salvador World Cup qualifier, will be the referee for the critical CONCACAF Champions League match between Tigres and Alajuelense that will decide the quarterfinal berth from Group 6.
Parea's assignment to the Tigres-Alajuelense match on October 24 was one of eight announced Thursday by CONCACAF for the final round of games October 23-25.
This will be the third Champions League match this year for the 31-year-old Parea, who also worked Olimpia-FAS on August 2 and the Galaxy-Islanders on August 29 in addition to CONCACAF Olympic qualifying earlier this year and the 2011 Under-17 World Cup.
Tigres must defeat Alajuelense or face the distinction of being the first Mexican team to fail to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League since it was inaugurated in 2008. Chivas de Guadalajara also must defeat Xelaju of Guatemala on October 25 or be eliminated.
