NEW YORK - Veteran referee Courtney Campbell will make his CONCACAF Champions League debut this season when he takes charge of the match between Puerto Rico Islanders and Isidro Metapan in Week 5 of the competition.
This will be the fifth straight season the 43-year-old Jamaican has refereed a match in the Champions League. Campbell has been a referee in the past three CONCACAF Gold Cups - including the 2009 final, worked the quarterfinals in three of the past four Champions Leagues and done matches involving Canada and Mexico in the semifinal round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.
His inclusion as part of an all Jamaican crew for the September 27 match in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was one of eight assignments announced Thursday for the fifth week of the Champions League.
