TORONTO - Toronto FC's German midfielder Torsten Frings will miss the remainder of the year and the CONCACAF Champions League Group Stage with a hip injury that will require arthroscopic surgery, the club announced Wednesday.
The loss is the second major injury blow to in the past six weeks for Toronto, which saw striker Danny Koevermans go down with a torn ligament in his left knee in mid July.
The 35-year-old Frings, who missed a month earlier this year with a shoulder injury, last played in a 3-1 loss to Santos Laguna in the Champions League on August 28. He finished the full 90 minutes.
The result left Toronto three points behind Santos in Group 1 with two games to play - both away from home. Only the group winners advance.
Team spokesman Mike Massaro said via email that the hip injury was a nagging problem with no identifiable cause. Frings did not play in Toronto's last game, a 2-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.
Toronto will have three games in Major League Soccer before returning to the Champions League on September 25 against CD Aguila in El Salvador.
