QUETZALTENANGO, Guatemala - Edgar Chinchilla converted off a corner in the 67th minute and Xelaju beat 11-time Mexican league champion Chivas de Guadalajara 1-0 in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Both teams had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half before Chinchilla made a near-post run, outleapt Hector Reynoso and deflected Alejandro Alpizar's corner past Chivas keeper Luis Michel into the far-side netting.
Chivas was making its first appearance in the Champions League since the reformulated championship was inaugurated four years ago. The match was played on the 50th anniversary of Chivas' only CONCACAF club championship, when it defeated Comunicaciones to win the inaugural Champions Cup.
The goal came against the run of play, with Chivas having more of the possession but neither side was able to create many quality chances.
Chivas appeared to be getting some sustained offensive pressure with the 54th-minute insertion of Omar Arrellano, who found space along the left side.
Marco Fabian volleyed one of his crosses wide in the 59th, Rafael Marquez Lugo had his goal disallowed in the 61st and Xavier Baez had his shot from distance knocked down by Xelaju keeper Fernando Patterson in the 65th but gave up a long rebound.
As Chivas, who used eight of their starting lineup from Saturday's 1-0 win over San Luis, pushed forward for an equalizer, Xelaju had a chance to add to its lead in the 77th, but Alpizar volley a cross wide of the left post from inside the six.
The victory was Xelaju's first in the Champions League, having lost once and drawn once in its previous appearance in 2010, and also playing W Connection to a 2-2 tie on August 2.
Xelaju next will host W Connection on September 18, while Guadalajara will travel to Trinidad to play Connection on August 29.
