NEW YORK - Hugo Cruz, who has been the referee in five World Cup qualifying matches already in the 2014 cycle, will officiate the opening match of the CONCACAF Champions League between defending champion Monterrey and Chorrillo of Panama, the confederation announced Wednesday.
In the assignments for the first week of matches, Cruz will work with fellow Costa Rican countryman and assistants Leonel Leal and Osvaldo Luna as well as fourth official Walter Quesada for the July 31 match at Estadio Tecnologico.
This will be the 30-year-old Cruz's third season in Champions League, having worked matches in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. He worked the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying finals and most recently refereed the World Cup qualifier between the United States and Antigua & Barbuda on June 8 in Tampa, Florida.
