SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Fredy Montero scored a pair of goals to lift the Seattle Sounders FC to a 2-1 win against host Herediano in a CONCACAF Champions League Group D match at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto Wednesday night.

The result left Seattle as the only unbeaten and untied team in the Group Stage, and - with nine points - moved it within sight of the quarterfinals. Comunicaciones climbed into second place with six points after a 1-0 victory over Monterrey on Wednesday.

Herediano lost its third straight and was in last with no points.

After putting Seattle in front in the fourth minute, Montero struck for his second goal in the 54th minute. Nate Jaqua won a header at the edge of the box and Roger Levesque ran onto the ball and put a shot off Herediano goalkeeper Daniel Cambronero from almost parallel of the left post.

With the ball rolling across the face of goal, Montero stretched his left foot to just get a touch, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth minute, Jaqua's angled pass freed Montero into the box and the Colombian split a pair of defenders before skipping a shot from 15 meters inside the far post.

Montero had another dangerous chance in the 13th minute, but after taking on two defenders, his 30-meter shot was well over the bar.

In the 26th minute, Montero turned provider, sending Levesque into the box. Levesque tapped it to Jaqua, but his side volley from the top of the 18 hit the post before it was cleared.

After putting a free kick wide of the net just past the stroke of halftime and having a shot saved by Keller from the edge of the 18 in the 42nd minute, Jose Cancela equalized from the penalty spot in the first minute of first half stoppage time.

Cancela, who was pushed from behind by Levesque in the box, sent Keller the wrong way with his well-placed penalty, leveling the score at the half.

Moments after stepping onto the field, Pat Noonan nearly doubled Seattle's lead, taking a touch into the box and forcing Cambronero to parry the shot away for a corner in the 74th minute.

Four minutes from full time, Marvin Angulo took a bouncing ball from the top of the 18-yard box that troubled Keller, but the veteran keeper parried the ball over the bar for a corner kick. Seconds later, Herediano had another chance, but Patrick Ianni blocked the blast inside the box.

The Costa Ricans pushed numbers in attack in a desperate attempt to equalize in five minutes of extra time.

The Sounders next host Herediano at CenturyLink Field on September 20 in the fourth round of group play.
