SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- CD Marathon will start the third round of the CONCACAF Champions League with a new coach.

Former Honduran national team manager Edwin Pavon was installed as the club's manager on Wednesday, replacing Nicolas Suazo, who was fired after Sunday's 3-2 loss to Real Espana - its second loss in three games.

The 47-year-old Pavon is a member of the Honduran parliament and has coached several different clubs, including Marathon in 1997 and most recently Real Juventud from 2008-2009.

Suazo, the older brother of Honduran national team striker David Suazo, took over as Marathon's coach before the start of Honduran Clausura in January, replacing Manuel Keosseian, who qualified the club for this past season's CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

Pavon inherits a side in third place in the Honduran standings with a 2-2-1 record and eight points, two behind Apertura leaders Necaxa and Platense, and in third place in Group C of the Champions League with a 1-0-1 record and three points, behind Monterrey and Saprissa.

"Marathon has what it takes to look to win the league and the Champions League," Pavon was quoted by Honduran daily Diario Tiempo.

Pavon guided Olimpia to the 2000-2001 Honduran league title, qualifying it for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, where it reached the final before losing to the Los Angeles Galaxy. He also coached Honduras at the 2003 Gold Cup and its Olympic side at the 2004 Athens Games.

The Champions League Group Stage resumes Tuesday after a two-week break with four games, including Marathon travelling to Mexico to face Monterrey.
