GLENDALE, Arizona - Mexico kicked off its 2013 season on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw against Denmark at University of Phoenix Stadium. Both sides scored on second-half penalty kicks in a friendly played before a crowd of 43,345.

The Mexicans used the game as a warm-up for their CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying final round opener against visiting Jamaica on February 6 at the Estadio Azteca.

El Tri's best chance of the first half came in the 16th minute. An intricate build-up down the left wing saw Angel Reyna pull the ball back inside the box to Javier Aquino. The 22-year-old darted into the middle, striking a left-footed shot from 16-yards out that took a deflection and was saved acrobatically by Danish goalkeeper Jesper Hansen.

Mexico could have taken the lead in the 31st minute, when the impressive Reyna raced down the left once again and delivered a cross to Aldo De Nigris. Before the ball could reach the Monterrey standout, Denmark defender Kris Stadsgaard inadvertently deflected it towards his own net and off the post for a corner.

The two-time defending CONCACAF Gold Cup champion finally got on the scoreboard thanks to a successfully converted 68th minute penalty kick by Guadalajara's Marco Fabian. The dynamic Aquino earned the opportunity after getting taken down in the box by Mikkel Kirkeskov.

Mexico had a chance to double its lead in the 81st, but Raul Jimenez's effort in a one-on-one situation with Hansen was well saved by the goalkeeper.

Jose Manuel de la Torre's side was made to pay for that miss two minutes later, as Andreas Cornelius leveled with a penalty kick of his own. The 19-year-old, a quickly rising star in Europe, scored three goals in Denmark's 4-0 win over Canada on Saturday.

The result ended Mexico's four-game winning streak, but extended its unbeaten run to five.
