CHONGQING, China -- Canada battled Norway to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday in the last match for each at the 2013 Yongchuan Cup, a four-nation women's tournament.

The result earned the Canadians -- who needed a win to capture the title -- a second-place finish, three points behind champion Norway.

In a match of limited scoring opportunities, Norway's Isabelle Hersloven had arguably the best chance, when her second-half attempt struck the crossbar.

Canada's Christabel Oduro was thwarted twice during a quick first-half sequence by Norway goalkeeper Ingrid Hjelmseth, who partially saved an initial shot and then scrambled to beat the 20-year-old midfielder to the loose ball.

Oduro had a late chance break-away for Canada, but Hjelmseth won a last-ditch challenge.

The North Americans brought a young roster to China, with seven of the 21 players being born in 1991 or after. The youngest -- defender Kadeisha Buchanan and forward Nichelle Prince -- were born in 1995.

Canada head coach John Herdman was pleased with the effort his team put forward.

"The players competed well physically against a very strong Norwegian side - and we matched them," he said. "We had the better passages of play but they probably had the better chances from direct play and set pieces.

"All credit has to go to the young players, this tournament has been a good start for Canada, but there is still a long way to go."

Canada, which will host the 2015 Women's World Cup, will next be in action at the 2013 Cyprus Cup, March 4-13.
