OLIVEIRA DE AZEMEIS, Portugal -- After losing its opening two group encounters this week, the Costa Rican national women's futsal team defeated Malaysia on Wednesday, 9-1, for its first victory at the 2012 Mundial de Futsal Femenino (Futsal Women's World Tournament) at the Pavilion Dr. Salvador Machado in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal.
Pricilla Torres and Monica Vargas scored two goals apiece to lead the Ticas' offense. Marisol Arias, Keylin Gorgona, Daniela Hidalgo, Natalia Lopez and Yendry Villalobos each contributed a goal as Costa Rica earned their first three points of Group B at the 10-team tournament.
The Ticas, who also became the first CONCACAF team to win a match at the annual competition, end group play on Thursday with a match against Spain.
Costa Rica opened its group on Monday with a 2-0 loss to the Ukraine and then dropped a 4-1 decision to Russia the next day.
The third edition of the tournament, which includes the host along with Iran, Japan, Venezuela and two-time champion Brazil in Group A, concludes with its consolation round and semifinal matches on Saturday and Sunday with the finals.
