TIJUANA, Mexico -- After making history Sunday night by qualifying for a final of Mexico's top flight for the first time, Club Tijuana's representatives and coaching staff were wholly pleased with the job done, while recognizing that the final chapter in the fight for the title begins later this week.
The Xolos won the second leg of their Liga MX semifinal series 3-0 over Leon to complete a come-from-behind triumph and advance 3-2 on aggregate. The two 2012 Apertura semifinal round opponents are also the last two clubs to ascend to Mexico's top division.
By getting past the Esmeraldas, Tijuana - a team founded only in 2007 - will compete against Toluca for a championship after just three tournaments and one previous appearance in the Liguilla (Clausura 2012 quarterfinalist).
"I'd like to congratulate the team, like always. We played a perfect match, with superiority from start to finish, and with a just result," said Tijuana coach Antonio Mohamed. "We're going to enjoy the moment."
The Baja California club came into Sunday's match with a two-goal disadvantage, but leveled the series on goals by South American forwards Fidel Martinez and Duvier Riascos in the 42nd and 68th minutes, respectively. Mexican Richard Ruiz completed the astonishing recovery one minute into second-half injury time.
"We have a winning attitude and we believe in our strength," said Mohamed. "I have a group of very intelligent players, who know what's at stake. There's not much left to say, we demonstrated why we were the best in the tournament."
Tijuana will now take on Toluca, the Liga MX regular season champion. The two clubs finished the campaign even at the table's summit with 34 points each, but the Red Devils enjoyed a slightly better goal difference to claim the top seed (both have claimed Mexico's first two berths for the 2013/14 CONCACAF Champions League).
"It's great to come up against him," Mohamed said of his Toluca counterpart, veteran Mexican coach Enrique Meza. "It's one more opponent, with a lot of experience coaching in Mexico. For me it's my first final, and I hope to enjoy it."
The Grand Final of the Apertura 2012 begins on Thursday, when the clubs meet at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana. The return leg is scheduled for Sunday evening at the Estadio Nemesio Diez in Toluca.
