OTTAWA - Victor Montagliani was elected president of the Canadian Soccer Association on Saturday, the CSA announced, beating Rob Newman in a two-man race after incumbent Dominic Maestracci withdrew earlier in the day.

Montagliani, who had served three terms as vice president and chairman of the national teams and has been a member of the CSA executive committee since 2005, begins his four-year term immediately. Newman, who was publicly endorsed last week by the country's four professional clubs, also was a vice president.

The election at the CSA's Annual General Meeting installed Montagliani as the country's 33rd president in its 100th year. Mastraecci had served since 2007.
