SAN FRANCISCO - Women's Professional Soccer, the three-year-old women's league and successor to the old Women's United Soccer Association, will not play in 2012, suspending operations due to "pending legal issues", the league announced Monday.

The announcement comes less than a day after the United States won CONCACAF's Olympic women's qualifying tournament over Canada, and officially puts the league on hiatus until 2013.

"We firmly believe there is a place in the global sports landscape for Women's Professional Soccer," league CEO Jennifer O'Sullivan said in a statement on the league's website. "Making the decision to suspend the 2012 season was a difficult and painful one, but it is necessary to take the time to address current issues and solidify our business in order to provide appropriate support needed to achieve the league's long-term goals."

WPS was reduced to five teams when it terminated the Boca Raton, Florida-based team magicJack in October. The action was the latest in a series of conflicts between the league and magicJack's owner, Dan Borislow - who invented the magicJack computer-telephone device. He purchased the Washington Freedom, renamed the club and moved it to Florida.

After being repeatedly disciplined through the 2011 season for not meeting league standards, Borislow sued the league in August. The league subsequently accused Borislow of "unprofessional and disparaging treatment of his players" and not paying the team's bills.

Earlier this month, a Florida judge in West Palm Beach ruled the league did not follow its own procedures for terminating magicJack.

In its statement the league said it was suspending the 2012 season "to focus on the resolution of certain pending legal issues and the challenges that now face the League as a result of its ongoing dispute with a former owner."
