GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – In a bid to reach the quarterfinals of its inaugural Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League campaign, Suchitepequez head coach is leaving nothing to chance.

The Venados (1W-2D-0L, 5 points) will progress with a win over visiting Group H-rival FC Dallas (1-2-0, 5) on Thursday at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores.

“Being organized tactically, defensively, offensively…respecting the principles of our playing model, trying to counter the qualities of Dallas,” said head coach Edwin Vasquez , when asked how Suchitepequez can gain the needed result. It is a very fast team and has very clear their ideas of playing, but Suchitepequez also has theirs of trying to control the ball and having patience.

“We have 90 minutes to find the result and maybe one of the best virtues that we can have is patience.”

Suchitepequez demonstrated that quality superbly in its first-ever SCCL match, a 1-0 win over visiting Real Esteli on August 18. A goal in second-half stoppage time by Kevin Ruiz proved to be the difference.

Vasquez referred to that encounter, noting: “We got the score in the final minute that gave us the three important points, so that is the key…try to maintain that patience and work during the whole match to be able to earn the result.”

FC Dallas’ Carlos Ruiz, a legend of Guatemala football didn’t make the trip, but Vasquez is cognizant that the MLS leader has more than enough talent to compensate for that loss.

“Dallas has a very competitive squad,” he finished. “They have good players. They have {Maximiliano] Urruti up front, who has a dangerous shot. They have [Michael] Barrios, who is very fast, so Dallas is Dallas. You have to respect all of the players and tomorrow we are going to be alert so that we can earn the result.”
