    MLS Re-Entry Draft has CCL impact

    NEW YORK -- D.C. United, which will participate in the 2014-2015 CONCACAF Champions League, bulked up on defense during Major League Soccer's Stage One Re-Entry Draft Process on Thursday.

    United selected veteran defenders Sean Franklin from the LA Galaxy and Bobby Boswell from the Houston Dynamo.

    Franklin was taken in the first round after the Galaxy declined his contract option.  The 28-year-old had played his entire MLS career with LA and has one career CCL goal.  He was a starter on LA's MLS Cup championship teams in 2011 and 2012, featuring in 33 matches this past season.

    Boswell, who was selected on the second round, should be no stranger to D.C. fans as he started his professional career with United, playing with the team from 2005-2007.  He was out of contract with the Dynamo, with which he scored three career CCL goals, and will receive a bona fide offer from the club, MLS said.  The 30-year-old has been one of the league's sturdiest and most reliable defenders, starting 32 games in 2013.

    D.C., which finished with the poorest record of all of the 19 MLS teams at 3-7-24 and 16 points, still earned a CCL berth by defeating Real Salt Lake for the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup crown.

    The Galaxy advanced to the quarterfinals of 2013-2014 competition and will meet Club Tijuana (Mexico) in the home-and-away series next year.

    The Dynamo was eliminated in the group stage this past fall.

    Players who were not selected are eligible for the Stage Two draft, which will take place on Wednesday, December 18.  That draft will take place via teleconference with all 19 clubs represented.
