MEXICO CITY – The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced Thursday that its men’s national team will kick-off its World Cup preparations with a friendly against Korea Republic on January 29 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

It will be Mexico’s first match at the venue since 2004, when it defeated Guatemala 2-0 in a friendly.

Mexico has won five of the 11 all-time meetings between the Brazil 2014 participants, including their last, 1-0, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2006.  Korea emerged victorious on three occasions.

While the FMF has yet to name a full-time head coach, on-loan manager Miguel Herrera has returned to Club America in advance of the its Liga MX playoff series against Tigres that starts Sunday.  It is widely anticipated that the former Atlante standout, who guided El Tri to a 9-3 aggregate triumph over New Zealand in the CONCACAF/Oceania intercontinental playoff, will get the job on a permanent basis.  No announcement is expected to be made until at least December 2.

Korea will participate in its ninth World Cup finals after finishing second in Group A of Asian qualifying behind Iran.
