MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – Janae Gonzalez scored three goals and Mexico defeated El Salvador 7-0 in the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship on Friday at Catherine Hall Stadium.

The result temporarily moves the Mexicans into first place in Group A with four points, one ahead of Jamaica, which will play Haiti later in the evening.

After a 1-1 tournament-opening draw against Haiti on Wednesday, the Tricolor was looking to bounce back with a strong performance.  It was clear from the whistle that it planned on returning to winning ways.

Jaqueline Garcia struck for the first of her two tallies in the 15th minute to give Mexico a 1-0 lead.  She received a pass from Gonzalez and dribbled straight down the middle, leaving goalkeeper Eleonor Hernandez with no chance.

Five minutes later, Mexico doubled its lead.  A shot by Gonzalez was saved by Hernandez into path of Belen Cruz, who converted from four-yards out.

As a rain storm passed through, Gonzalez made it 3-0 in the 26th minute.  Her shot from the right side of the box slipped through Hernandez and rolled agonizingly over the line.

Gonzalez seemed to be in the middle of everything for Mexico.  The U.S.-based 16-year-old was at it again in the 33rd minute, delivering a cross from the right that Hernandez pushed into the middle of the box for Cinthia Huerta to slot home.

El Salvador looked much improved as the second half wore on, but it conceded three more goals inside 15 minutes of the interval.

In the 54th minute, Hernandez could not secure a cross from Cruz, allowing Gonzalez to seize her second goal.

Within two minutes, Mexico extended its advantage to 6-0 as Garcia completed a brace with a brilliant effort from distance off the assist from Vanessa Flores.

Just before the hour mark, Gonzalez topped off a Player of the Match performance by netting her third goal.

Mexico finishes group play on Sunday with an encounter against Jamaica, while El Salvador will take on Haiti.
