Herediano, Saprissa look to seal final births

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Finalists for the Costa Rican Invierno will be decided over the next two days as Herediano and Saprissa carry leads into semifinal, second-leg play.

Herediano topped host Cartagines 2-0 last Sunday thanks to goals by Yosimar Arias and Victor Nunez during a seven-minute, second-half stretch.

On Sunday, the 23-time champion welcomes the Azules to the Estadio Eladio Rosabal, where it has won 10 straight games by a combined score of 29-8.

“It is going to be a very difficult game,” commented Herediano forward Anllel Porras.  “I think that they (Cartagines) are going to make it the most difficult 90 minutes of this series.  They are going to come with everything.  We know that they have important players.  We are not a bit relaxed.  We know that this is half of the road.  We are going to take the match in all seriousness and try to get the victory at home.”

Saprissa must wait until Monday to visit rival Alajuelense.  Deyver Vega’s goal in the 63rd minute gave the Monstruo a 1-0 home last Sunday.

Defender Douglas Sequiera realizes that it will be difficult to get a result on the road against the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinalist.

“We know that we will have a very difficult opponent in front of us, one that is at home and with their fans,” said Sequeira.  “We should come out concentrated and play an intelligent match so they don’t catch us as surprised at any moment during the match.  We hold an advantage, a small one, but in the end an advantage, so we are going to go with everything.  You can’t speculate about these matches or play to draw, because that’s how they are lost.”

The Costa Rican Invierno champion will qualify for the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League.
