Herediano aiming to repeat in Costa Rica

HEREDIA, Costa Rica – Herediano will look to lift the trophy for a second straight season in Costa Rica, when it hosts Alajuelense on Sunday in the second leg of the Torneo Invierno final.

After a 0-0 draw in the series opener on Monday, all be decided at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero between two teams that have combined to win the last six domestic titles.

The Florenses, who overcame Cartagines to capture the 2013 Verano, have won the championship on 23 occasions.  Alajuelense will be attempting to secure a record-equaling 29th championship, a mark currently held by Saprissa.

Clearly, the significance of the task and creating history has caught the attention of Herediano’s players, especially winger Yosimar Arias.

“We did a good tactical job in Alajuela, but the match here is going to be like how we’ve been doing the entire season,” said the 27-year-old.  “We have gone 34 years without being repeat champions, so we are 90 minutes from making history and leaving something very special in this institution.”

Even though Herediano has won 11 consecutive games at home, finding the back of the net against the visitor will not be simple.  The Manudos have conceded only once in seven outings.

Arias believes, though, that playing at the Eladio Rosabal Cordero does give his team an advantage.

“We are doing a good job in the defensive end,” added the midfielder.  “We have to keep on even if they score a goal on us.  Those who are ahead try to improve.  In Alajuela we erred a little allowing them a lot of room, but now we are in our home that we know well and personally.

“This is the most difficult field to play on.”
