GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – The Guatemalan Apertura playoffs kicked-off this week with quarterfinal, first-leg action.

Marquense enjoyed a night of goals in its 3-0 home win against Universidad de San Carlos on Thursday.  The sending off of Universidad defender Jaime Vides resulted in the first Marquense goal, as Joaquín Álvarez converted on a penalty kick in the 45th minute.  The host doubled its advantage through Jorge Mario Ortiz's 59th minute goal.  Edwin Fuentes completed the scoreline with a 72nd minute strike.

There's still everything to play for after goalless draw between host Halcones and Heredia on Thursday at the Estadio Comunal.  Heredia, a 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League participant, was content to return home with a draw in its pocket.

Under heavy rain, visiting Comunicaciones rallied to defeat Suchitepequez, 2-1, on Wednesday.  The home side went ahead in the 19th minute through Jose Hidalgo, but two minutes later a hard foul by Wílson Ventura on Jean Marquez resulted in a red card.  The 2013 Torneo Clausura champion knew how to take advantage and drew level in the 27th minute courtesy of Paolo Suarez.  Minor Lopez scored the game-winner shortly after the break, beating goalkeeper Ricardo Foster off a superb pass from Jairo Arriola.

The series between Malacateco and Municipal is still very open after their 2-2 draw on Wednesday.  Darwin Oliva was the main figure for Municipal with his first half brace, scoring in the fourth and 34th minutes.  After each Oliva goal, however, Malacateco responded promptly.   Roberto Carlos Peña struck in the 16th minute and Adrian Apellaniz did the same six minutes before the interval.
