Caribbean Cup Recap: March 23, 2016 Matches

Action from the Scotibank CFU Men's Caribbean Cup match between host Antigua & Barbuda (yellow jersey) and Aruba on March 23, 2016, in North Sound.

The 2016-17 Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup continued intensely on Tuesday with three of the four matches decided by one goal or fewer. Capitalizing on a new tournament regulation, Guadeloupe became the first team to acquire three points through a penalty-kick shootout, when it prevailed over Suriname after a scoreless draw. Now, in order to avoid potential issues with tiebreakers, a team will be awarded three points if it wins in regulation time or extra time, or prevails on penalty kicks. No other points will be awarded.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- Romario Harewood scored the only goal as Barbados earned a 1-0 victory over visiting Curacao in the first match for each in the 2016/17 Scotiabank CFU Caribbean Cup on Wednesday night at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.

Both sides will complete Group 4 play with matches against the Dominican Republic. The Curacaoans will host first on March 26, while Barbados will travel for the finale three days later.

“The motivation was there and we planned for the game,” said Barbados head coach Colin Harewood. “The way we played was all about planning for the game…and we played according to how we planned.

“This is our first game in [a long time] and I don’t think the cohesion is there as yet, but this was a game that we planned for. We watched Curacao. We watched how they played and we knew how we needed to come out and the players we needed to put out there.”

Curacao head coach Patrick Kluivert was frustrated by the result.

“I’m quite disappointed,” expressed the former Ajax, Barcelona and Netherlands star. “We analysed the Barbadian team like how they played which is quite defensive. When they had possession a lot of times they played the long ball.

“We had a lot of balls lost in the midfield and the defenders easily gave the ball away and one of the first things you learn is you don’t give the ball easily away.”

Despite enjoying a significant advantage in possession (60%-40%), Curacao couldn’t convert control of the ball into goals. It had several chances to take a first-half lead, with Aston Villa’s Leandro Bacuna coming particularly close. Uneven finishing and an outstanding effort by Barbados goalkeeper Keasel Broome proved pivotal.

Barbados netted the elusive goal in the 69th minute, when Harewood beat goalkeeper Eloy Room with a header off a corner kick.

In the other games, Antigua & Barbuda kicked off its Group 1 campaign with a 2-1 win over visiting Aruba, while Martinique took early command in Group 3 by topping the British Virgin Islands, 3-0, as three different players got their names on the scoresheet.
