PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago -- po
The Mexican side has won both of its games, while Caledonia and Comunicaciones have yet to register a point. A draw this evening would mean that Toluca would only have to win one of its last two games to clinch advancement to the quarterfinals for a third time in three attempts.
Comunicaciones is off to a perfect 4-0-0 start in the Guatemalan Apertura, scoring eight goals and conceding two. The only blemish in its young season was a 2-1 loss at home to Toluca last week. Goals by the visitors in the 14th and 25th minutes sandwiched Minor Lopez’s 18th minute equalizer.
The Cremas have experienced success in Trinidad, defeating W Connection 2-1 in a 2009-10 Group Stage game played in Marabella. The scorers that evening – Transito Montepeque and Rolando Fonseca are no longer with the team. That victory, though, was Communicaciones’ sole one against six losses in seven all-time CCL road games.
Caledonia has never won a CCL matches in five attempts nor scored more than one goal in any outing. Its best result was 0-0 draw against visiting Marathon last year.
The 2012 Caribbean champion’s roster is dotted with prominent Trinidadian internationals such as Aubrey David, Densill Theobald and Jamal Gay, each of whom was on Soca Warriors’ 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad.
A draw may be acceptable on any other evening so early in a competition. This occasion, however, requires that a winner emerge in order slow down Toluca’s premature claim to a group title.
