Aird’s Rangers, Canada future shines brightly

Fraser Aird (pictured) is a rising star with Rangers in Scotland and the Canadian national team programs.

SUNRISE, Florida – Fraser Aird is feeling good about his football right now and for good reason.

The 19-year-old was named Rangers Young Player of the Year after helping lead the legendary Scottish club to an undefeated season in League One, the first in in its 115-year history.

“It’s good, a massive boost for my confidence, for me to go on and hopefully have a good career in the game,” Aird said, who joined Rangers’ youth system in 2011.  “I’m young, just starting out, but hopefully I can continue to keep playing well, continue doing what I’m doing and hopefully get recognized.”

Aird had what he calls a dream season at Rangers.  The left midfielder scored seven goals in 36 first team appearances for the club he grew up supporting.

“It’s an amazing achievement for a young boy to even get on the first team and doing well at such a massive club,” beamed Aird.  “At a club like Rangers, a lot of young boys get their chance, but it’s just up to the player to take it.  I’ve been grateful enough to get my chance and lucky enough to take it.  Hopefully I can continue doing well and become a big player in Scotland.”

He is also hoping to be a big player for Canada.  After representing Scotland on the U-17 and U-19 levels, Aird was on Canada’s preliminary roster for last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, but did not make the final selection.  He was with the Canadian U-20 national team during a recent week-long training camp in Sunrise, Florida, under the guidance of new coach Rob Gale.

“I think one of the best things for a footballer in this day and age is to play for their country,” Aird said.  “I’m delighted to be involved in Canada’s setup.  I’ve had a really good season with Rangers.  I can go away preseason next season with Rangers and hopefully I can do well and keep getting recognized.”

With all eyes on Brazil for next month’s FIFA World Cup, Aird has some rooting interest in the competition with Rangers teammate Arnold Peralta on the 23-man Honduras roster.

“He’s a good pro and he’s the only player from our Rangers squad going to the World Cup,” Aird said.  “All the boys wished him the best of luck before the season finished.  Hopefully Honduras can go into the World Cup and do well.”

Undoubtedly, the same that Aird wishes for Canada one day.
