After ‘Clásico’ draw, Olimpia thinks of Plaza Amador

Olimpia (pictured) will look to stay on track for a 10th appearance in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, when it visits Panama’s Plaza Amador on September 14, 2017.

CHOLUTECA, Honduras – Just minutes after a 1-1 stalemate against host Motagua in the Honduran Apertura on Saturday night, Olimpia focused immediately on its 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League semifinal, first leg showdown with Plaza Amador.

The sides will square off Thursday at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City, Panama.

“Now coming up next for us is the CONCACAF match against Plaza Amador and so we have to recover this group to get a good result and then close things out in San Pedro Sula,” said Olimpia head coach Carlos Restrepo, whose team is trying to reach the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League for a 10th consecutive time.

By taking a point from then first-place Motagua, Olimpia (2W-2D-1L, 8 points) moved from fourth to third place. The rivals sit behind new table-topper Real Espana, a 4-0 winner over Marathon.

Overall, Restrepo was pleased with the “Clásico” performance on the Estadio Emilio Williams’ synthetic surface. Forward Carlo Costly gave the visiting Leones a 1-0 lead in the second minute, before Rubilio Castillo leveled 40 minutes later.

“It was a difficult match on a pitch that both felt, but, in regards to the outcome, I think it was very even, although with some alternation in offensive football,” Restrepo finished. “It was a well-played match, but they also never got tired because they know what they have.”

Following four straights victories in all competitions to open the 2017/18 campaign, Olimpia has won only once in its last five outings.
