CONCACAF CHAMPIONS’ CUP™
|
The CONCACAF Champions’ Cup determined the confederation’s club champion for 46 years, from 1962 to 2008, and was the region’s longest running international competition. It was replaced with the CONCACAF Champions League for the start of the 2008-2009 season.
The tournament initially matched the national champions of each member country and was dominated by Mexican clubs, which won 18 titles between 1962 and 1997 – including five by Cruz Azul.
In 1998, D.C. United became the first team from the United States to claim the crown and then the following year, Necaxa reclaimed the title for Mexico and with it CONCACAF’s berth in the first FIFA Club World Championship (2000), where it finished third.
The final round of the 2000 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup was actually played in early 2001, when the Los Angeles Galaxy claimed the United States’ second title in three years.
In 2002, after an 11-year period where the finals where the finals were contested at a single or neutral venue, the Champions’ Cup reverted to a two-leg, knockout format for the last three rounds (quarterfinals, semifinals and finals).
Pachuca won the 2002 crown and was followed by fellow Mexican club Toluca in 2003. Costa Rican clubs Alajuelense and Deportivo Saprissa claimed the next two titles, sending Saprissa to the Club World Championship in 2005 when it finished third.
As in its early days, Mexico finished the Champions’ Cup era by winning the last three titles. America won its fifth CONCACAF crown in 2006 before Pachuca won the last two in 2007 and 2008.
