    USA under-20s finish third at L'Alcudia Tournament in Spain

    The USA under-20 team took third place at the L'Alcudia International Tournament in Spain by defeating Russia 5:3 on penalty kicks after scoreless draw (0:0) at the end of regulation on 28 August.

    Prior to the third-place match, the USA dropped a 1:0 decision to Uruguay in the semifinals on 27 August.

    The USA advanced to the semifinals after drawing 0:0 with Slovenia in their final group match on 25 August. In their earlier two group games in the eight-team tournament, the USA defeated Egypt 3:0 (21 August) with goals from David Johnson, Danny Karbassiyoon and Miguel Saavedra, and tied Russia 1:1 (23 August), with Johnson scoring from the penalty spot.

    The USA are in preparation for the 2003 FIFA World Youth (U-20) Championship, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates from 27 November - 19 December.
