    USA open FIFA World Youth Championship with victory; Honduras & Panama fall

    The USA's Under-20 team began the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands with a victory, while Honduras and Panama fell in their respective tournament openers on Saturday.

    Chad Barrett scored just before halftime gave the USA (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 1:0 win over Argentina (0-1-0, 0 Points) in Group D play at the Het Diekman Stadium in Enschede, while two goals each from Ricardo Parada and Jose Fuenzalida led Chile (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 7:0 victory over Honduras (0-1-0, 0 Points) in a Group C encounter at the Vijverberg Stadium in Doetichem.

    In Group B action, the Ukraine (1-0-0, 3 Points) defeated Panama (0-1-0, 0 Points) 3:1 at the Galgenwaard Stadium in Utrecht. Oleksandr Aliiev scored twice and Maksym Feshchuk had the other tally for the Ukraine, while an own goal was the only score for Panama in the loss.

    The first round of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship continues for the CONCACAF representatives on Sunday, as Canada takes on Syria to open Group E at the Willem II Stadium in Tilburg.

    In all, 24 countries are in six groups of four teams for the first round of the FIFA World Youth Championship. The top two teams in each group, plus the four best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stage.
