INCHEON, Korea Republic – A first-half goal by Josh Sargent earned the United States (1W-1D-0L, 4 points) a 1-0 win over Senegal (1-0-1, 3) in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup on Thursday at Incheon Stadium.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia (1-0-1, 3) prevailed against Ecuador (0-1-1, 1), 2-1, meaning Americans finished the day atop the Group F table on four points. The U.S. will advance to the Round of 16 with a draw on Sunday, when it meets the Saudi Arabians.

Sargent, who scored a team-high five goals in the recently-completed CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, netted scored in the 34th minute for his third goal of the tournament. Inside the box, the 17-year-old forward received with his right foot a pass from Luca de la Torre and turned coolly, before drilling a left-footed past goalkeeper Mouhamed Mbaye.

In the 62nd minute, Sargent nearly doubled the USA’s lead with a left-footed effort from the top of the box, but Mbaye dove left to make the save.
