CHEONAN, Korea Republic -- Myer Bevan scored two goals and New Zealand (1W-1D-0L, 4 points) recorded a 3-1 win over Honduras (0-0-2, 0) in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup on Thursday at Cheonan Sports Complex.

Earlier, thanks to a 4-0 defeat of Vietnam (0-1-1, 1), first-place France (2-0-0, 6) claimed one of Group E’s direct berths into the Round of 16.  Honduras and the Vietnamese will meet on Sunday, with only the winner having any chance of progressing beyond the group stage.

Just 45 seconds after the opening whistle, Bevan put New Zealand ahead 1-0.  The Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 forward latched onto a long ball and raced into the right side of the box, before firing off the underside of the crossbar from an unkind angle 11-yards out.

New Zealand’s lead was doubled in the 23rd minute, when a Hunter Ashworth header off a free kick caught Honduras goalkeeper Javier Delgado off his line.

The Hondurans halved the deficit five minutes into the second half.  Capitalizing on defensive indecision in the New Zealand box, Darixon Vuelto poked an effort off the crossbar, but Jorge Alvarez was there to side-foot home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Bevan, however, restored New Zealand's two-goal advantage in 56th minute by converting from the penalty spot.

Next up for Honduras: Sunday, May 28 v Vietnam
