SEOGWIPO, Korea Republic – Costa Rica (0W-1D-1L, 1 point) secured its first point of the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, playing Portugal (0-1-1, 1) to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday at Jeju World Cup Stadium.

The result kept the Costa Ricans in last place, five points behind first-place Zambia (2-0-0, 6), which beat second-place Iran (1-0-1, 3), 4-2, earlier in the day.

Portugal took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, when Diogo Goncalves converted a penalty kick off the hands of goalkeeper Erick Pineda after Diego Mesen was whistled for a handball.

Three minutes into the second half, Jimmy Marin equalized from the penalty spot – also off the hands of goalkeeper Diogo Costa -- for the Central Americans, who enjoyed an advantage in possession (54%-46%) and shots attempted (11-8).

Portugal’s Ruben Dias was issued his second yellow card in the 71st minute for elbowing Barlon Sequeira in the side of the head and was ejected, but Costa Rica couldn’t capitalize on the man advantage.

Next up for Costa Rica: Saturday, May 27 v Zambia
